Guide updated · grades and open status change — verify Parks SA
Decide first: a short bird or nature stop, or a long self-sufficient corridor. Jack Point plus one southern walk is enough for most first Adelaide day trips. Distances, grades and times below are planning ranges — always confirm on Parks SA and park alerts. Weather, closures and beach access change.
Decide before you lace up
- Easy icons: Jack Point pelican observatory, Chinaman’s Well Journey to Gold, Lakes Nature and Ngrugie Ngoppun — high reward without multi-day logistics.
- Ocean beach walk: Ocean Beach Hike from 42 Mile (~3.4–3.5 km return planning range) — soft sand, no casual swim.
- Signature corridor: Nukan Kungun (~25 km one-way) — shuttle or overnight; self-sufficient only.
- Boat / peninsula: Godfrey’s Landing style access is not a Loop Road day-walk substitute.
Doing Nukan Kungun plus a full beach 4WD plus every Loop Road loop on a first visit usually ends badly. Pick the table row that matches your group, then open the trail page.

Walks FAQ
Short answers before you stack too many walks into one Adelaide day. Official Parks SA pages win on grades and closures.
Tap a question to expand the answer.
What is the best first walk at Coorong National Park?
Most first-timers pair Jack Point pelican observatory with either the Ocean Beach Hike at 42 Mile Crossing or a short Loop Road nature walk near Salt Creek. Nukan Kungun is a long self-sufficient corridor — not a first-afternoon add-on. Always verify with Parks SA.
Do I need a walk permit?
No walk permit is required for standard day walks beyond camping, nature-camping or beach-camping permits where you stay overnight. Day vehicle entry is free for this park on Parks SA listings (checked 17 Aug 2026) — [VERIFY] live.
Can I swim after the Ocean Beach walk?
Ocean beach conditions are unsuitable for casual swimming — rough waves, rips and gutters. Treat the Southern Ocean as a lookout, not a beach day.
Is Nukan Kungun a day walk?
Fit walkers sometimes do the ~25 km one-way as a long day with a car shuttle; many split it over two days with bookings. It is flat but exposed and self-sufficient — plan water, heat and leave-time honestly.
