Where to stay near Coorong National Park

Prioritise official Parks SA camping when camping suits you — you wake up near the walks instead of driving first. There is no heritage lodge option in this park. When pads are full or you want a commercial bed, use Meningie first, then Salt Creek, Goolwa, Kingston SE, Narrung or Tailem Bend. Official park camping: Parks SA — Coorong accommodation.

Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Free day vehicle entry and official Parks SA camping bookings are never affiliated.

Choose a base by intent

Last town for fuel and food is usually Meningie before you treat the park as self-sufficient. Salt Creek is thinner. Goolwa is a northern cruise/kayak logic — not a shortcut to 42 Mile. No invented prices.

Families / Jack Point first

Meningie night or Parks SA camp

Fuel, food, toilets-with-a-roof. Next morning: pelicans then one southern short walk. Book 42 Mile if you want to wake at the ocean trail.

Early Nukan start

Loop Road or 42 Mile (official)

Book the pad first. Tailem Bend is only a highway stage. Carry all water. Shuttle car at 42 Mile if you walk one-way.

Pelicans vs ocean vs cruises

Jack Point: Meningie-side. Ocean hike: 42 Mile. Murray Mouth kayak/cruise: Goolwa. Do not pick Goolwa expecting a 20-minute hop to Salt Creek Loop Road.

What to bring

Practical kit for lagoon walks, soft sand and changeable coastal weather

  • 2–3 L+ water capacityMulti-day Nukan Kungun and exposed beach / dune days — no reliable trail water; plan heat margin
  • Sun hat + high SPFOpen dunes and lagoon flats — little shade; “cool coastal myth” still burns hard
  • Wind / light rain shellOcean and lagoon edges stay windy on “fine” Adelaide days; spray and changeable weather
  • Sturdy sand-capable shoesSoft sand and dune paths punish flip-flops on Ocean Beach Hike and Nukan Kungun
  • Day pack 20–30 LWater, layers, snacks and first-aid for Jack Point + 42 Mile or Loop Road half-days
  • Offline maps + waterproof pouchAvenza park PDFs and screenshots of Parks SA pages before you leave Wi-Fi — coverage is patchy
  • PLB or satellite messenger000 needs reception. Optional but sensible for remote overnight / beach days — not a substitute for telling someone your plan
  • Binoculars (bird days)Jack Point pelicans and lagoon edges — optics beat close approaches and drones
  • First-aid + blister kitHeat, soft-sand hot spots and remote response times — pack before feet fail mid-corridor
  • HeadlampCamp toilets, pre-dawn birding, short winter days and late reverse drives
  • Gas cooker (camp)Campground wood/solid-fuel bans apply in season; gas usually OK except Total Fire Ban — re-check CFS / Parks SA
  • Tyre deflation kit (4WD beach)Only if beach driving: deflate for soft sand, reinflate before sealed roads — experience required; no dune freelancing
  • Recovery boards (4WD beach)Soft sand extraction thinking for experienced beach drivers only — skip if you are walking 42 Mile instead
  • Waterproof dry pouch / bagBoat/kayak days and beach wind-driven spray — keep offline maps and layers dry
  • Insect repellent (warm months)Lagoon edges and camp nights — useful when wind drops and insects rise
  • Power bankPhotos, offline maps and Emergency+ still need charge when signal is gone
