The decision is simple: if your plan needs a car shuffle, a booked pad, or low-tide beach driving, do not also promise the Adelaide reverse the same night. The Coorong is close enough for a first-visit day if you pick Jack Point and one southern stop. It is not a Blue Mountains lookout 90 minutes from the CBD.

The failure
People treat “200 km” as a morning errand, then add a 25 km corridor walk and a beach-drive. Heat, soft sand and the Princes Highway reverse eat the day. You get home late, cranky, and you still did not watch the pelicans.
Who should not day-trip: mixed-ability families in January heat; anyone without a hard reverse time; anyone whose “must-do” list includes both Nukan Kungun and Younghusband 4WD.
The honest same-day shape
Jack Point pelican observatory first. One southern focus: Salt Creek short walks or the Ocean Beach Hike from 42 Mile Crossing. No casual ocean swim. Free day entry [VERIFY].
If 42 Mile parking or heat fails, skip south and sit at Jack Point. That is still a Coorong day.
When overnight wins
Book Loop Road or 42 Mile via Parks SA if you want a Nukan start, a second birding morning, or a beach-drive that needs tides. Nature and beach camping are their own permit products.
Meningie is the last reliable services town. Salt Creek is thinner. Goolwa is a different road for Murray Mouth / cruises — not a shortcut to 42 Mile.
